The opportunity
We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer / Project Manager to join our growing multi-disciplinary team based in our Newark office. In this role, you will lead the mechanical design and coordination for a variety of projects. Our team works on local, regional, and global projects, including healthcare, academic buildings, institutional and government buildings, museums, laboratories, commercial offices, and mission-critical facilities.
At Arup, you will have opportunities to develop your skills as a Project Manager with the expectation that you will achieve Arup's internal certification as a Project Manager, taking the lead on projects. Your career path may also involve supplying to the continued growth of our business.
Key Responsibilities:
- Mentor staff and contribute to business development efforts.
- Support a team with a wide range of experience, providing guidance as needed.
- Be part of a growing team, supported by the broader Arup network in the region, offering opportunities for personal and professional growth within the organization.
- Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team on exciting and challenging projects, working across various fields.
- As a senior engineer, provide technical support and identify staffing needs for projects. Take on responsibility for both the technical and financial success of your projects.
- With Arup's flexible working policy, we encourage senior staff to lead by example and be present in the office as much as practical to support and mentor team members at all levels. You will also provide technical mentorship and develop a culture of excellence.
The skills
- Minimum 8 years of related experience with a consistent record of mechanical system design for buildings, incorporating sustainability goals required.
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
- PE required, with experienced engineer of record preferred;
- Identify staffing needs on projects.
- Support career development for team members through participation in promotion, appraisal, and review processes, as well as mentoring and coaching.
- Build a climate of trust and willingness within the team, develop individuals in their technical specialization, and provide timely feedback and recognition.
- Monitor project budgets, expenses, and financial performance to achieve revenue targets and profit margins.
- Implement financial controls and risk management practices to mitigate financial risks associated with projects.
- Ensure alignment of contracts with the firm's commercial objectives and risk tolerance by negotiating contracts, terms, and conditions.
- Identify potential clients and projects that align with the firm's expertise and strategic goals.
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with existing and prospective clients, and help establish relationships with new clients.
- Support the preparation of proposals and bid submissions.
- Adhere to quality assurance processes and standards to ensure excellence in delivery.
- Help to identify project risks related to technical, and regulatory requirements.
- Follow quality control measures to monitor and improve project outcomes and client satisfaction.
- Focus on low-carbon and zero-energy design, including ground source systems, load shedding by thermal mass, and natural ventilation.
- Present technical material in traditional and innovative ways for review by both technical and non-technical audiences
- Ability to be on site in the NY area as needed.
Preferred:
- NCEES certification.
- LEED Accreditation, WELL Certification, or ASHRAE BXCP Certification.
- LEED AP BD+C.

Hiring Range - The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in Washington DC is $112,400 - $156,000 per year. This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary. Please note hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of Washington DC will differ.
